The Governments of Japan, Switzerland, the US and Uruguay will co-host a Special High-Level Event on the Minamata Convention on Mercury, on the margins of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) and the eve of the UN summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda. The objective of the event is to get more countries to deposit their instruments of acceptance, approval, or accession to the Convention, through a special ceremony recognizing those countries that already do so. The event also will feature an exchange of views on the Convention among high-level representatives, moderated by the Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), Achim Steiner.
