Regional Capacity Building Workshop on the Water – Energy Nexus Operational Toolkit: Renewable Energy

The regional capacity building workshop on the 'Water – Energy Nexus Operational Toolkit: Renewable Energy,' is organized by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). It will address the potential use of commercialized renewable energy technologies to improve water security by providing the required energy sources for water-related activities. These activities include: freshwater distribution; wastewater treatment; the provision of different energy sources that use small amounts of water and encourage water saving for improved energy security and the diversification of the national energy mix. These activities will: contribute to providing modern energy services in rural / remote areas; reduce the reliance on fossil fuels as an energy source; and mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The regional workshop is organized under the strategic framework of UN ESCWA on strengthening the capacity of governments of the ESCWA member countries on mainstreaming the energy-related SDGs into their national development plans and within the context of the work programme for 2016-2017.
