Open-ended Informal Meeting on Establishing the HLPF

An open-ended informal meeting on establishing the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) to follow up on the implementation of sustainable development is scheduled for 30 January 2013, at UN Headquarters in New York, US. The decision to establish a HLPF was part of the outcome of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), which called for “an intergovernmental and open, transparent and inclusive negotiation process under the General Assembly to define the format and organizational aspects of the high-level forum.” Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, Permanent Representative of Brazil, and Cesare Maria Ragaglini, Permanent Representative of Italy, have been appointed by the President of the General Assembly (UNGA) to facilitate the negotiations. Convening this first meeting, they said it would address the main issues concerning the format and the organizational modalities of the Forum.
