One Water Summit

The One Water Summit will accelerate action on SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation) and discuss solutions to water challenges, in preparation for the 2026 UN Water Conference. The Summit will convene on the margins of the high-level week of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

President of France Emmanuel Macron and President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced the Summit at the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 28). The One Water Summit is part of the One Planet Summit initiative, an initiative of the Government of France, launched in partnership with the UN, World Bank Group, and Bloomberg Philanthropies.

The Summit recognizes the linkages among water, climate change, biodiversity, and pollution – and the potential role of water in climate adaptation policies. Water quality is deteriorating, water availability is decreasing, demand for water is anticipated to increase, and populations are facing both water scarcity and excess water as a result of natural disasters. Within this context, the Summit will focus attention on water policy and opportunities to develop solutions.

The Summit aims to contribute to ongoing UN discussions and processes to enhance global water governance, building on the momentum of the 2023 UN Water Conference. Participants will consider opportunities to strengthen: transboundary cooperation; technical solutions, including Nature-based Solutions (NbS); and opportunities to bridge the global financing gap in the water sector. The Summit further aims to stimulate partnerships among stakeholders to scale up projects.
