One Planet, One Ocean: Knowing our Ocean, Protecting our Marine Treasures, Empowering Ocean Citizens

This Rio+20 side event, which is organized by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), will present and discuss a number of initiatives that support the Rio+20 ocean targets leading to the sustainable use of the ocean. The side event will be structured around three inter-­connected themes: knowledge for an improved management of the oceans; protection of the natural and cultural heritage of the ocean and coasts and the essential services they provide to society; empowerment of ocean citizens and society. Panel speakers will include: Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director-­General; Michel Jarraud, Secretary-­General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO); and Etienne Bourgois, President of Tara Expeditions.
