OEWG 2: Science-Policy Panel to Contribute Further to the Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste and to Prevent Pollution

The second session of the Open Ended Working Group (OEWG) on a Science-Policy Panel to Contribute Further to the Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste and to Prevent Pollution (OEWG 2) will continue the group’s work to prepare proposals for the science-policy panel.

The session is taking place pursuant to resolution 5/8 of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) titled, ‘Science-Policy Panel to Contribute Further to the Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste and to Prevent Pollution,’ in which UNEA decided that a science-policy panel should be established to contribute further to the sound management of chemicals and waste and to prevent pollution. UNEA decided to convene, subject to the availability of resources, an ad hoc open-ended working group to prepare proposals for the science-policy panel. The OEWG is mandated to prepare proposals for the new science-policy panel by the end of 2024, and to consider, among others: institutional design and governance of the panel; its name and scope; principal functions; and rules of procedure and operating principles governing the panel’s work.

Originally, the OEWG was supposed to convene in Dead Sea, Jordan. In early November, the venue was moved to Nairobi, Kenya, with no changes to the original dates.

The first part of the OEWG took place in Nairobi, Kenya, and online on 6 October 2022. A resumed first session (OEWG-1.2) convened in Bangkok, Thailand, from 30 January to 3 February 2023. Read the SDG Knowledge Hub summary of OEWG 1 and OEWG 1.2
