As part of the UNFCCC Global Climate Action Agenda, this event will aim to: highlight examples of adoption and implementation of the Paris Agreement; provide political support and suitable policy options in implementing actions on oceans, seas, coasts and small island developing States (SIDS) issues in the context of the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14 (conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development); connect oceans, coasts and climate initiatives with national actions plans, initiatives and commitments, such as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and the SDGs; showcase and promote financial support and capacity development to help countries fulfill their NDCs, with special emphasis on oceans, seas and coasts, particularly in SIDS and African countries; and develop steps for advancing oceans and climate issues in the UNFCCC process and to implement SDG 14. Oceans Action Day will bring together UNFCCC negotiators, as well as other representatives from governments, intergovernmental/international organizations and civil society to advance the oceans and climate change agenda at the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the UNFCCC and beyond. The main organizers are the Government of Morocco, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Ocean and Climate Platform, and the Global Ocean Forum, which is aims to promote good governance of the ocean, sustainable development for coastal and island peoples around the globe, and healthy marine ecosystems.
