Ocean Economy and Trade: Sustainable Fisheries, Transport and Tourism

The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Commonwealth Secretariat and the International Ocean Institute are hosting this seminar to discuss how international trade in goods and services can support the advancement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 (To conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development) and other related goals. The seminar also aims to enhance understanding of the oceans economy concept and its links to trade. The meeting will underscore the interdependencies of ocean-based sectors like fisheries, coastal tourism and maritime transport. Participants will also discuss: global oceans challenges and policy responses, including climate change and the implications of sea level rise; ocean biodiversity, large marine ecosystems (LMEs) and marine genetic resources (MGR); illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing; and the role of fisheries in graduating from Least Developed Country (LDC) status.
