Nelson Mandela Peace Summit: UNGA High-level Plenary on Global Peace

In UNGA resolution 72/243, adopted on 22 December 2017, UN Member States decided to hold a high-level plenary meeting on global peace in honor of the centenary of the birth of Nelson Mandela.

In January 2018 UNGA President Miroslav Lajcak appointed Jerry Matthews Matjila, Permanent Representative of South Africa, and Geraldine Byrne Nason, Permanent Representative of Ireland, to co-facilitate a consultative process with Member States to produce a political declaration for adoption at the plenary meeting, and consultations took place throughout June and July 2018. The second draft of the declaration was considered on 16 July.

The logistical arrangements and concept note are available here. The summit will take place on 24 September, the day before the start of the general debate for UNGA 73. Also on 24 September, in the afternoon, the UNGA will hold a high-level meeting on financing the 2030 Agenda.
