Mountain Futures Conference

In March 2016, stakeholders from 35 countries established the Mountain Futures Initiative, as part of the inaugural Mountain Futures Conference in Kunming, China. The Initiative seeks to foster local innovations for resilient livelihoods in mountain regions worldwide; it aims to identify, develop, and scale up mountain-based solutions to global problems.

In 2017, the World Agroforestry Center and Kunming Institute of Botany joined with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and the Government of China to give the Initiative a 200-hectare physical home in Honghe, Yunnan. The Mountain Futures Site will host several projects, including the large-scale replication of environmental conditions in global mountain regions; mushroom domestication and cultivation; China-Africa sustainable trade of plant resources; and smart monitoring of ecosystem health.

Meanwhile, the Mountain Futures Initiative is advancing the work of the new working group on 'Land Systems for Mountain Futures,' endorsed in 2017 by the Global Land Program as part of the Future Earth research partnership.

The Centre for Mountain Ecosystem Studies will host the second international Mountain Futures Conference, which will offer unique opportunities to participate in and shape the new activities of the Mountain Futures Initiative, and continue knowledge and innovation-sharing for all with interests in mountain regions.
