Modalities for Negotiating a Global Compact on Migration: Exchange with Civil Society and Other Stakeholders

Co-facilitators Jürg Lauber, Permanent Representative of Switzerland, and Juan José Gómez Camacho, Permanent Representative of Mexico, have issued a roadmap outlining a series of informal meetings to discuss modalities, timeline, possible holding of preparatory conferences and other practicalities of the preparatory process for the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. The roadmap covers meetings in November and December 2016, but consultations are envisaged to continue in January 2017, and should result in a resolution on modalities of the preparatory process for the Global Compact. As part of the consultation process, an open informal exchange with civil society, the private sector, diaspora communities and migrant organizations will take place on 22 November 2016.
The negotiated compact will be presented at an intergovernmental conference on international migration in 2018. A refugee response compact is expected to be developed through a process guided by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
