International Mountain Day 2016

International Mountain Day 2016 will focus on the theme ‘Mountain Cultures: Celebrating Diversity and Strengthening Identity'. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) will lead global observance events that aim to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development, and build alliances that will bring positive change to mountain peoples and environments. In 2002, the UN General Assembly designated 11 December as International Mountain Day to foster understanding and respect for the traditional knowledge and techniques of mountain communities that are key to managing and enhancing fragile mountain ecosystems. Events in 2016 will also highlight ways to boost livelihoods in mountain areas through a focus on high value sustainable products and tourism. #WeLoveMountains
