Intergovernmental Meeting for the Preparation of a Declaration of Ethical Principles in Relation to Climate Change

This intergovernmental meeting of experts will finalize a draft declaration of ethical principles in relation to climate change, for its submission to the 39th General Conference of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The meeting will build on a year of work on this issue, including a September 2016 meeting of the Ad Hoc Expert Group and consultations with member States by written procedure between 17 October 2016 and 1 February 2017. A first draft of the Declaration has been produced, based on the Ad Hoc Experts Group meeting, the comments of member States from these consultations, and further advice of the Ad Hoc Experts Group. The first draft will provide a basis for the work of the intergovernmental meeting. The purpose of creating this UNESCO declaration would be to promote the moral basis for tackling the threat posed by climate change to people and the planet. It may clarify a set of universal principles that could help mobilize international solidarity and coordinate action across cultures and societies.
