Illegal Wildlife Trade Conference: London 2018

The Government of the UK will host this conference, which will bring together global leaders to help eradicate illegal wildlife trade and better protect the world’s most iconic species from the threat of extinction.

The meeting will focus on three key themes. The first is tackling illegal wildlife trade (IWT) as a serious organized crime, looking to: increase collaboration across continents to tackle IWT-associated illicit financial flows and corruption; strengthen networks of IWT law enforcement experts, helping front line countries to coordinate across the trade routes; and improve understanding of the linkages to wider security challenges.

The second theme will be building coalitions, to: use levers of influence across illicit trade routes, through increased engagement with the private sector, NGOs, academia and new partners; harness technology; and share and scale up successful and innovative solutions.

The third theme, closing markets, will investigate: sharing common challenges and solutions to make market closure as effective as possible, including tackling displacement to neighboring countries, and encouraging other countries to follow suit; and sharing successful approaches for reducing demand for other illegal wildlife products.
