7-8 September 2023 Geneva, Geneve, Switzerland
Global Intergovernmental Meeting on Minerals and Metals 2023

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) will convene the Global Intergovernmental Meeting on Minerals and Metals, which will highlight key findings from regional consultations and offer an opportunity to provide feedback to inform the Co-Chairs’ summary of outcomes. Participants can also provide written input to the consultations.

Intergovernmental regional consultations preceding the Global Intergovernmental Meeting will focus on stocktaking existing actions to enhance the environmental sustainability of minerals and metals and consider the implementation of the UN Environment Assembly’s (UNEA) resolution on mineral resource governance (UNEP/EA.4/Res.19). They will address the topic of sand and sustainability, including policies on the environmentally sound extraction and use of sand, and the topic of tailings management. National focal points will share opportunities for enhanced international cooperation in the mining sector.

Regional consultations for the Eastern European Group of States, the Western European and Other States Group, the Latin American and Caribbean States Group, the Asia Pacific States Group, and the African States Group will be held between April and September 2023.
