From Local to Rio: Linking Women’s Low-Carbon Initiatives with Sustainable Development Policy

This side event at the 55th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, is being organized by the Women's Environment and Development Organization (WEDO), and the Global Gender and Climate Alliance (GGCA). The event aims to highlight key issues of gender and technology and build support from the women’s community for work at the next negotiating sessions of the UNFCCC, Rio 2012 and beyond. This event will draw attention to the roles of women as inventors, managers and distributors of low-emission technologies in the context of promoting sustainable development and effective climate change responses. Panelists will present successful projects on the ground and connect to women’s leadership in a green economy, and highlight UN Women’s goals in the context of Rio 2012. Panelists include: H. Elizabeth Thompson, UN Assistant Secretary General and Executive Coordinator of Rio 2012; Nereidge Segala, Farmer and President of Ser do Sertao, Pintadas, Brazil; Lucy Wanjiru, Programme Specialist, Gender and Environment, UNDP Gender Team; and Gail Karlsson, Senior Policy Advisor, ENERGIA International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy.
