Forest Day 5 will take place in Durban, South Africa, on 4 December 2011, on the sidelines of the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UNFCCC. The Day will seek to inform the UNFCCC global agenda and forest stakeholders on ways to implement an international REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks) funding mechanism that produces social and environmental benefits, above and beyond avoided emissions. The event will have a particular focus on Africa, looking at the tropical forests of the Congo Basin and elsewhere, and the continent's wide expanses of dry forest areas.
