Experts’ Workshop on Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements

The workshop aims to facilitate informal discussions on sustainable urbanization within the context of the future UN development agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Experts will present papers and lead discussions on a range of topics relevant to the urban agenda, including: growth, prosperity and jobs for all within planetary boundaries, with a focus on women and youth; universal access to affordable and quality services, including water and sanitation; food security and ecosystems services; integrated urban planning and design; and environmental sustainability and resilience. The workshop discussions will feed into thematic discussions on urbanization taking place as part of the Seventh Meeting of the Open Working Group (OWG) on the SDGs, which will take place from 6-10 January 2013, in New York, US. The Communitas Coalition, which is composed of UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), Tellus Institute, ICLEI and nrg4SD, is organizing the meeting in collaboration with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).
