Electronic Consultation on Participation of Indigenous Peoples at the UN

UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Mogens Lykketoft and the four advisers on indigenous peoples' participation at the UN are inviting concrete proposals on enabling the effective participation of indigenous peoples' representatives and institutions in UN meetings on issues affecting them, such as: procedures and modalities that will make the participation of indigenous peoples' representatives meaningful and effective; criteria for determining the eligibility of indigenous peoples' representatives for accreditation as such; nature and membership of a body to determine the eligibility of indigenous peoples' representatives for accreditation; and details of the process, including the information required to be submitted to obtain accreditation as an indigenous peoples' representative. Participants may provide submissions in English, Spanish, French or Russian. Proposals should be sent to ipadvisers@un.org. On the basis of this electronic consultation and previous UNGA resolutions and UN reports and studies on the topic, the advisers will prepare a first draft compilation for consultations with Member States and representatives of indigenous peoples, during the 15th session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII) that will take place in New York, US, from 9-20 May 2016.
