ECOSOC High-level Segment 2017

The 2017 High-level Segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) will begin with statements by the President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) and the UN Secretary-General, and a keynote address. It will include a ministerial segment (17-19 July), which is the ministerial meeting of the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), a general debate (convened in parallel from 17-19 July), a high-level policy dialogue with the international financial and trade institutions (20 July), and a thematic discussion on ECOSOC's annual theme, 'Eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions through promoting sustainable development, expanding opportunities and addressing related challenges' (20 July). The segment aims to effectively assess progress in eradication of poverty, and provide further policy guidance on SDG 1 (no poverty) and related goals. The aim is to commit to innovative measures that will advance the international poverty eradication agenda. Two reports of the UN Secretary-General are being prepared to inform deliberations during the Segment: the report on the 2017 main theme on the eradication of poverty in all its forms and dimensions, and the thematic report on eradicating multidimensional poverty. The High-level Segment represents the culmination of ECOSOC's annual cycle of work.
