Briefing on Consultatations to Enhance Synergies in UNGA, ECOSOC Agendas

Gillian Bird, Permanent Representative of Australia, and Martín García Moritán, Permanent Representative of Argentina, the co-facilitators for consultations on enhancing synergies and coherence and reducing overlap in the agendas of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and their subsidiary bodies, in light of the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, will hold a briefing on their draft recommendations, on 13 June 2017. Their five draft recommendations are: 1. Recommend the UNGA Committees and Bureaux hold joint meetings to discuss how its work relates to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda as well as seek advice from the UN Secretary-General on the feasibility of issuing joint UN reports for Committee resolutions; 2. Recommend that the Presidents of ECOSOC and the UNGA convene an annual briefing for UN Member States outlining the connection between the work of the UNGA on the 2030 Agenda and its link to the annual discussions to be held in the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) under the auspices of ECOSOC; 3. Recommend that future work on this process take into account other ongoing processes related to the 2030 Agenda, including the UN development system reform and the review of UNGA resolution 68/1 regarding the work of ECOSOC; 4. Recommend the General Committee in UNGA 72 present proposals on gaps and duplications in the Agenda of the Assembly as they relate to the 2030 Agenda, and use as a basis for these proposals the 2016 report issued by the small group led by Colombia on the 2030 Agenda alignment; and 5. Recommend that the UNGA President consider the feasibility of completing the alignment process by 2019.
