The “Before the Blue COP” workshop will seek to strengthen the links between climate policies and ocean protection. Participants will discuss the state of knowledge concerning climate and ocean change, the ocean in UN Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC) climate actions, synergies and gaps in climate and ocean actions, and national perspectives.

The Because the Ocean Initiative was launched in 2015 during the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC, in Paris, France.

A second “Because the Ocean” declaration, signed in 2016, encourages UNFCCC parties to consider submitting Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) that contribute to the protection and conservation of the ocean.

The Santiago Climate Change Conference will take place in December 2019 in Santiago, Chile.
