The African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) will bring together ministers and high-level political decision makers, sector specialists, media and international organizations for the fifth AfricaSan conference themed, ‘Transforming Sanitation in Africa: Accelerating Progress towards the Ngor Commitments to Achieve the SDGs.’ The AfricaSun initiative seeks to promote access to safe sanitation and hygiene in Africa and end large-scale open defecation. The Ngor Commitments represent a set of shared commitments by African governments on sanitation that emanated from AfricaSan4.

The four sub-themes to be addressed by AfricaSan5 are:

• Hygiene and the SDGs: leave no one behind;
• Policies, institutions and regulation;
• Monitoring and using evidence to improve hygiene and sanitation; and
• Building capacity and financing sanitation in Africa.

AfricaSan5 will convene together with FSM5 conference that addresses faecal sludge management (FSM).
