This Ad hoc open-ended working group (OEWG) to prepare for the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to end plastic pollution will take place from 30 May to 1 June 2022 in Dakar, Senegal, in a hybrid format.

The meeting is being held pursuant to UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) resolution 5/14, which requested the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director to convene an intergovernmental negotiating committee to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, based on a comprehensive approach that addresses the full life cycle of plastic. The UNEP Executive Director was further requested to convene an ad hoc open-ended working group to prepare for the work of the intergovernmental negotiating committee to end plastic pollution.
