5th Conference of the International Society for Integrated Disaster Risk Management

The 5th Conference of the International Society for Integrated Disaster Risk Management (IDRiM 2014) will meet under the theme ‘Building Disaster Resilient Communities'. The conference aims to bridge gaps and promote science-based solutions to empower local communities to advance disaster reduction, adapt to climate change and promote sustainable development. It also intends to: address opportunities for action through contributions from the areas of disaster science, technology, policy and practice; and stimulate a “next generation of ideas and actions” for disaster reduction. Conference themes will address cross-cutting issues, such as: disaster risk management, sustainable development, resilience building, vulnerability reduction, risk assessment and governance, risk financing, living with uncertainty, transformative processes, cultural recognition and change, poverty reduction, wellbeing, climate change adaptation, crisis communication and communities of practice. Conference participants will reflect on how theory, method and implementation presented by these processes can help to build disaster resilient communities. More specifically, the conference will address: building disaster resilient societies; integrating climate change and development goals; resilient cities, including case studies and best practices; creating an enabling environment to achieve resilience; emerging tools for integrated disaster management; risks and critical infrastructure protection; risk governance frameworks for resilient communities; and strategies for long-term, post-disaster mitigation measures.
