58th Meeting of the GEF Council [Virtual]

The 58th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council was originally scheduled to take place from 2-4 June 2020, with the GEF Council Consultation with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) scheduled to take place the day before the Council opened, on 1 June 2020.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the meeting will take place virtually from 2-3 June 2020. The 58th Council Meeting of the GEF and the 28th LDCF/SCCF Council Meeting will address agenda items that cover essential and time sensitive issues only.

On the first day, GEF Council Members are expected to select the next CEO and Chairperson for the GEF. The current CEO and Chair, Naoko Ishii, was elected in 2012. Among other accomplishments, she led the development and implementation of the GEF’s first-ever long-term strategy and promoted integrated approaches for greater results.

The Council is the GEF's main governing body. It comprises 32 Members appointed by constituencies of GEF member countries (14 from developed countries, 16 from developing countries and 2 from economies in transition). Council Members rotate every three years or until the constituency appoints a new Member.

The Council meets twice annually to develop, adopt and evaluate the operational policies and programs for GEF-financed activities. It also reviews and approves the work program (projects submitted for approval), making decisions by consensus.
