The 57th Session of the Commission on Population and Development will focus on the theme, ‘Assessing the status of implementation of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development and its contribution to the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development during the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development’.
The Conference will reflect on how the world has changed since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda, including demographic shifts and global threats, such as climate change, economic instability, inequality, pandemics, and technological advances. Participants will take stock of progress and consider how to position the agenda to ensure it is a core part of future solutions. The Programme of Action’s people-centered approach and its special attention to vulnerable populations aim to help ensure no one is left behind. Implementing the Programme of Action is key to achieve the SDGs and their targets, especially SDG 1 (no poverty), SDG 3 (good health and well-being), SDG 4 (quality education), SDG 5 (gender equality), SDG 10 (reduced inequalities), and SDG 13 (climate action).
The session will feature interactive discussions and a commemorative event under the auspices of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development. The UNGA President will convene the event, bringing together high-level UN officials and ministerial speakers.
The Commission on Population and Development is composed of 47 Member States elected by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for a period of four years on the basis of geographic distribution. The Commission advises the Council on population issues and trends and monitors and assesses the implementation of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development.
