The 2024 Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD) will take place ahead of the 2024 UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) on the HLPF’s 2024 theme, ‘Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: The effective delivery of sustainable, resilient, and innovative solutions in Asia and the Pacific’. The annual intergovernmental forum aims to assess progress and exchange knowledge, best practices, and policy solutions to support the 2030 Agenda, in line with regional priorities.
Organized by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the Forum will provide the space for an in-depth review of the Goals to be reviewed by the HLPF in 2024: SDG 1 (no poverty); SDG 2 (zero hunger); SDG 13 (climate action); SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions); and SDG 17 (partnership for the Goals). The Forum will also support presentation of voluntary national reviews (VNRs) at the 2024 HLPF.
The Asia-Pacific region is currently not on track to meet any of the SDGs by 2030. Within this context, the region will consider how to accelerate SDG progress in a way that leaves no one behind and allows the region to tackle the compounding challenges of climate change, conflict, and COVID-19 in a way that ensures a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable recovery. Participants will discuss opportunities to strengthen linkages between national, regional, and global follow-up and review and identify short-, medium-, and long-term solutions for achieving the 2030 Agenda.
The APFSD report and Chair’s summary will be submitted to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and conveyed to the HLPF.
