2016 Caux Dialogue on Land and Security

Coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the Caux-Initiatives of Change Foundation, the fourth Caux Dialogue will address the theme of ‘Realizing the potential of land restoration to mitigate migration'. According to research by the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative, around 25% of the world's productive lands and 10-20% of drylands are currently degraded, which contributes to increased migration and conflicts over natural resources. Drawing on the experiences of “pioneers” from around the world who are developing solutions based on trust-building and agro-ecological insights to boost land restoration, the conference will explore how innovative governance and sustainable land management can contribute to “a durable peace” in these environments. The conference is co-organized by Caux-Initiatives for Change, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and will include keynote addresses by William Lacy Swing, Director-General of the International Organization of Migration, and Mario Gattiker, State Secretary in the Swiss Federal Office of Immigration, Integration and Emigration. The conference will also feature the launch of the book, ‘Land restoration: Reclaiming landscapes for a sustainable future'.
