18th RRI Dialogue on Forests, Governance and Climate Change

This dialogue of the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI) will convene under the theme 'Challenges and Opportunities of Climate and REDD+ Milestones for Forest Communities'. It will explore implications for the rights and livelihoods of indigenous peoples and local communities of developments in international efforts to combat climate change, namely negotiations towards a global climate agreement in Paris in December 2015, and the further development of international climate and REDD+ funding frameworks and proposals. The Dialogue will provide a platform for taking stock of climate policy and financing developments, such as: the issue of including language on human rights principles and safeguards in the climate agreement; non-carbon benefits of REDD+ and joint mitigation and adaptation measures; and the status of safeguards, grievance mechanisms, full and effective participation of indigenous peoples in decision making and implementation, and direct access to the Green Climate Fund (GCF). The Dialogue is expected to identify priorities to ensure that the rights of Indigenous Peoples and other local communities are enhanced and safeguarded.
