story highlights

The Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program (K-CEP) hosted the Africa Cooling Efficiency Conference in Kigali, Rwanda, to explore opportunities to maximize energy efficiency of cooling solutions in the context of the global clean energy transition.

Delegates discussed, among other issues, how to reduce the use of hydroflourocarbons (HFCs) in cooling solutions.

The Global Panel on Access to Cooling convened after the conference to prepare a report to be released at the HLPR in July.

9 April 2018: The Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program (K-CEP) hosted the Africa Cooling Efficiency Conference in Kigali, Rwanda, to explore opportunities to maximize energy efficiency and prepare for the upcoming flagship report from the Cooling for All initiative.

The Cooling for All initiative was created to explore opportunities to incorporate methods to satisfy growing cooling demands for all sectors of society into the global clean energy transition. The initiative focuses on increasing efficiency for all aspects of cooling solutions, from cold supply chains for food and medicines to maintaining safe work and educational environments that increase productivity. The work of the initiative supports the objectives of the Paris Agreement on climate change, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the Montreal Protocol’s Kigali Amendment, which aims to limit hydroflourocarbon (HFC) production. HFCs are widely used in air conditioners and refrigerators as a substitute for ozone-harming cloroflourocarbons (CFCs), however they are also potent greenhouse gases.

At the Africa Cooling Efficiency Conference delegates explored opportunities for East African countries to maximize cooling-related energy efficiency best practices. After the conference, Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) convened the Global Panel on Access to Cooling to prepare for its upcoming flagship report, which will be released during the UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in July 2018.
