India’s success in rapidly increasing access to electricity for the poor, shows that access to electricity (SDG 7) also enables many services that contribute to achieving other SDGs. Access to electricity has supported progress towards SDG 3 (Health and wellbeing); SDG 5 (Gender equality); SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation); SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth); and SDG 13 (Climate action). These examples suggest that that an integrated approach to the SDGs should place last-mile electricity access and SDG 7 at the heart of the race to end poverty and ensure a sustainable future.
