Information on CLIMATE-L Subscription Settings & Submissions

Dear Colleagues,

As many in this community of practice head to Lima, Peru, and use this list to share information about their side events, publication launches and other important activities, we anticipate that the list traffic will increase considerably during UNFCCC COP 20.

This email contains information to help you manage your list subscription settings and make a submission to the list that is consistent with the guidelines and formatting preferences, so that you can all get as much value out of the list as possible.

As we have done in recent years, CLIMATE-L subscribers will receive three digest messages each day during UNFCCC COP 20. These digests will compile all of the messages that have been approved during the 8 hours since the last digest was sent. If you would like to receive all of the messages throughout the day, please see the instructions below and adjust your settings on or after Sunday, 30 November, to your preferred frequency. You can help us keep the information exchange focused and efficient by only sending one email announcing your side event, workshop or publication, and refraining from sending follow-up announcements regarding the same topic.

NEW Account/Subscription Management Features

To assist you in managing your subscription, IISD recently added a number of links at the end of each email you receive from our lists. Here are the links you'll find and a brief description of their function:

Each of the following links in bold will open a new message in your email program. Simply click “Send” on the email to change the setting.

  • FREQUENCY OF MESSAGES: You can determine how often you would like to receive messages from the list by clicking on the links to Once-A-Day (As Attachments or Displayed in Email Body), which sends you a digest message containing all the message sent that day, or Throughout the Day, which means you will receive each message as it is sent. You can also choose to Pause Messages without unsubscribing. As noted above, during UNFCCC COP 20, all CLIMATE-L subscribers will receive the digest option. Adjust your settings on or after Sunday, 30 November, if you would like to receive the messages throughout the day. After COP 20, the settings will revert to the previous status.
  • UNSUBSCRIBE: Please click Unsubscribe should you decide to leave the list. Note: You will not be able to send messages to the list unless your email address is subscribed.
  • SETTINGS: You can review Your Settings to see the email address subscribed, how your name appears, status of membership, subscription type, settings when posting, and the date joined.
  • SUBSCRIBED BUT NOT RECEIVING MESSAGES: Sometimes for technical reasons, your subscription will be “held.” If you have received messages in the past, but are no longer receiving them, click Lately to remove the hold. If you have never received messages, it is possible you did not confirm your subscription. Use Never [send email to: confirm-climate-l@lists.iisd.ca] to confirm.
  • MORE COMMANDS: To receive the welcome message again, click More Commands. The welcome message includes all the information a new member needs to make full use of our lists.
  • HELP & SUPPORT: If none of the options provided solves an issue you are encountering, feel free to contact us by clicking Help & Support.

The following links in bold will navigate your browser to Lyris, the software IISD uses to manage the lists.

  • ACCOUNT ACCESS: All your settings can be changed on the Lyris website by clicking Login. You can change your password by selecting a forum you subscribe to on the first page after you log in, then clicking “My Account” and the “Advanced” tab. Should you need to, you can Reset Password by clicking the link.
  • VISITING THE FORUM: When you Visit CLIMATE-L (or the relevant list) you can find a listing of all the messages sent on the list.

Submission Guidelines

The moderator will approve announcements that are suitable to an international audience and are relevant to the list's focus. Typical announcements include side event times and locations, open access publications, online resources, and conference information. See the information below if you have a job announcement.

In addition, postings should:

  • Be tailored to the purpose of the list. Generic messages (i.e. related to environmental education or governance) should not be sent to the list;
  • Include the Internet address (URL) rather than attached files. Please ensure attachments (PDFs preferred) are under 200 KB;
  • Be relevant to an international audience and relate to events, publications and activities at this level (rather than posting information about local events, for example). If possible, please indicate opportunities for list members to follow meeting proceedings by way of webcast or recording, a written summary online, Twitter hashtags, etc;
  • Be accessible to list members. Access to academic articles and resources should not be limited by journals requiring membership or payment. In addition, if you are sharing information for a book publication please indicate how list members can access review copies if applicable;
  • Be associated with an institution or organization rather than personal research or projects. The lists are just too large for us to allow individuals to send requests for surveys or input to personal research;
  • NOT include an “unsubscribe” link. Organizations that are sending their newsletters through our lists should remove such links to avoid confusion among our members as to which list they are unsubscribing from;
  • NOT be a press release, commercial posting, news story, polemic statement or posting intended to create discussion; and
  • NOT include a line to the moderator at the top asking that the message be posted on the list. We cannot edit messages before sending them to the list. Please send the message (including a relevant subject line) in exactly the format you would like readers to see it (as if you were sending it directly to the list yourself). Descriptive subject lines will be especially useful in helping subscribers to navigate the large number of messages that will be sent during the COP.

Any CLIMATE-L job announcements should be sent through Ms. Daniela Tarizzo (danielat@iisd.org) in the following standard format:

  • Organization's Name:
  • Organization's Website:
  • Post Title/Position:
  • Link to Vacancy Announcement: (attach file only if there is not a link available - maximum 55 kb). Please note that your attachments might not be added if they exceed 55kb
  • Duty Station: (please INDICATE both city/ies and country/ies)
  • Deadline for Applications:
  • Contact Person: (please INSERT all complete phone/fax prefixes)
  • Special Requirements: (ONLY for info on BINDING/RESTRICTIVE criteria; nationality, language, legal/logistical issues, etc.)

It is helpful to create a filter or rule on your inbox if you are going to send an email to the list and wish to avoid receiving auto replies. To do this, you can create a filter on the terms “vacation” or “automatic,” which will make most auto replies bypass your inbox.

Please double check before sending an email to the lists to ensure that all of the URLs are active, as we are unable to make corrections to outgoing messages.

If you feel that your posting has been rejected in error, please send us a friendly message with a well-reasoned argument for why your posting should be sent out.
