© G826 May 2009: The Group of Eight (G8) Energy Ministers Meeting took place in Rome, Italy, from 24-25 May 2009, under the theme “Beyond the crisis: towards a new world energy leadership.”

The meeting sought to define joint strategies to respond to global climate change.
During the meeting, International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka presented IEA’s analysis of climate change policy and the impact of the financial crisis on energy investments. The meeting concluded with the adoption of a number of joint statements, including by the G8 Energy Ministers, the European Commissioner and the Energy Ministers of Algeria, Australia, Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Libya, Mexico, Nigeria, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Turkey on globally significant issues of energy investments and a programme of action to increase energy access in developing countries, with special focus on Africa. The Energy Ministers of the G8 Countries, the European Energy Commissioner, the Energy Ministers of the G5 Countries (Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa) and the Energy Ministers of Egypt, the Republic of Korea and Saudi Arabia adopted a statement on energy strategies to respond to the climate change challenge while ensuring global sustainability. And the G8 Energy Ministers and the European Energy Commissioner adopted a statement containing additional messages to contribute to the G8 Summit to be held in L’Aquila, Italy, in July 2009.
